Weligama surf camps are tailored to the beginner crowd. This is the best beginner surf destination in Sri Lanka, and one of the best in the world. And there are some incredible places to stay..

There are plenty of Weligama surf camps to choose from these days.

Let me tell you why: This town and its long horseshoe beach is the single best place to learn to surf in the whole of Sri Lanka. Hell, we even rank it as one of the best places to learn to surf in the whole wide world.

It’s got sand-bottomed waves aplenty, good wind protection, easy access, and a range of reef and beach breaks in the surrounding area for when you do want to progress.

If that doesn’t sound like a town tailor-made for surf camps then we don’t know what is!

A lot of the best surf camps in Sri Lanka actually make thier home along this stretch of the southwest shore. It’s best visited in dry season between November and March and it has waves for everyone.

Here’s our pick of what we’d say are some of the best surf camps in Weligama town right now…

This is just one part of our complete overall guide to surfing in Sri Lanka

The Surfer Weligama

The Surfer Weligama

The Surfer Weligama is like what Icebergs is to Bondi…It’s been here since the start and you can almost hardly imagine the one without the other.

It’s hardly a surprise that they’ve expsanded in the last few years to open a whole second branch of accomdoation. They now have their main hub – known as The Surfer Beach Camp – and another building – TS2 Weligama – that’s now used to offer more budget accommodation choices for those who want to keep costs low.

You can choose either when you book. (We’d say go for the Beach Camp if you can afford it. There’s a pool there, sunny lazing areas in the garden, a great restaurant, and more).

The package is very good value for money. Coming in at under $500 per person, it includes a surf lesson per day, a yoga session each day, daily breakfasts, and – here’s the kicker – free use of the in-house surfboards, which is mega because you’ll be staying about 30 seconds’ walk from the best beginner waves in arguably Sri Lanka.

We’d say if in doubt, book this!

A note on why we partner with BookSurfCamps.com: Book Surf Camps are probably the biggest online aggregator of surf camps and surf-yoga packages in the world. We sounded out a quite a few potential partners before we affiliated with them. But, in the end, the abundance of choice for beginners, intermediates, and female-only surfing sealed it. We also love the simplicity of their booking system and the trusted brand name, along with the focus on connecting with homegrown local businesses on the ground.

Solid Surf and Yoga House

Solid Surf Camp, Weligama

The tried-and-tested name of Solid Surf and Yoga House has now opened its doors in Weligama and to be quite honest, it’s going to make a lot of people very happy indeed.

These guys just know how to do things right.

Let’s begin with the property where you’ll be staying. It’s lush – as in lush very nice and lush green. Unlike other spots on this list, it’s not on the busy, traffic-choked beach road, but behind in the hills and backsteets of Cape Weligama.

There, you’ll find it crowding a central pool that reminds us of something out of a Balinese villa, with thatched-roof lazing areas and Moroccan-inspired lounges. It’s all very nice indeed.

The surf offering is incredible. They have a one-size-fits-all way of planning the week, which splits mixed-ability groups into advanced and beginner cohorts. You’ll surf in different places but gather again later on to hang and chat about the waves.

Lessons (or surf guiding, for more advanced classes) are every day and include long free-surf sessions, which means you could be in the water up to six hours per day!

Lucky’s Surf Camp

If you like your surf camps with a bit of style then you’re going to LOVE Lucky’s.

The place started life as a humble surf camp that was run under the guiding hand of one of Sri Lanka’s very best surfers (Lucky himself).

Since then it’s grown and grown and can now boast one of the best darn properties on the whole island.

Expect a super-cool whitewashed villa space with wood-banister-fringed terraces and polished concrete throughout, effortlessly mixing with the cheese plants and palm trees, the wicker lights and real-wood chairs and tables. It looks LOVELLLLY.

There’s a rooftop for sunset watching, cold Lion beer in hand ofc. Rooms range from budget doubles to seaview suites, but they’re all niccee.

You can book into surf lessons on site or after you reserve your room. There are better rates for 7-day packages, which is worth considering if you’re staying in Weli for a whole week and want to surf every day.

Surfers Paradise

If budget is your main concern then look no further than the shoestring camp offering from Surfers Paradise. These guys can do you 10 private surf lessons, six nights’ accommodation, and breakfast thrown in, all for under the $300 mark (when it’s on offer – when it’s not, you’ll pay just over the $300, which is still bordering on the ridiculous).

It’s true that you’ll have to concede you won’t be staying anywhere luxurious. But the lodge isn’t bad. It’s half homestay, half hostel sort of thing with a green garden facing the main river in Weligama, about 5 minutes’ walk from the beach. Rooms are spacious, shared dorms are clean. It’s nothing to write home about but it’s all you need for a week of surfing and sunning yourself.

What we like is that all the instruction is run by locals from Weligama itself. It’s good and very hands-on, and you’ll be supporting the community.

The Native

The Native, Weligama

We’re going to cheat with our last pick here.

Mhmm…The Native isn’t a surf camp in the traditional sense. They don’t do all-in surf packages that include surf lessons and whatnot.

Instead, they offer a very chilled, very serene pad in the backstreets of Weligama town that’s great if you’re more of a slow traveler, want to surf at your own pace, and like have extra space to spread out and relax without the stresses of a pre-planned itinerary.

Tucked over the river from the heart of the town, it’s away from the hustle and bustle of central Weligama. That means you’ll hear peackocks and the sway of the palms in the trade winds instead of beach bars and traffic.

Of course, the downside is that you’re over 15 mins’ walking to the surf points, but tuk-tuks are everywhere here and the walk isn’t all that bad at all!

The feel of the place is just so nice we thought it beared a mention. Polished concrete floors, hanging plants, bright and breezy rooms, plus a fantastic local/international breako each morning. Oh yea, and they might just have the fastest WiFi in Weligama!
