This guide is more about low-cost digs that offer a good location for surfers who prefer to explore the breaks at their own pace.
That’s not to say that the hostels listed below don’t offer good surf packages. Many do. It’s just that you can often book the spots below without booking a complete package.
That makes them just about perfect for two types of travelers: 1) Those on a budget and 2) Advanced surfers who want good value stays but not planned surf guiding around the island.
We’ll say this: Lombok has some seriously fantastic hostel options. There are off-the-hook party hostels where you can hit the Bintangs every night but also more chilled hostels in quiet locations.
These days, there are also a few great hostel options that focus on remote workers, offering co-work spots and whatnot.
Anyway, most are in our close to the buzzing hub of the island that is Kuta Lombok. It’s the best place to be for renting scooters and venturing west to breaks like Air Guling and Serangan or east to Gerupuk and Tanjung Aan.

Waiwas Hostel
Waiwas Hostel Lombok/HostelWorldThe best of the bunch in our humble opinion. These guys have created a hostel for the ages. It’s one that ticks all the boxes and then some.
Let’s begin with the basics.
The beds. Set into huge, pod-style alcoves with curtains and in-built side tables, they are not your run of the mill bunk. There’s no creaky bedframe and you won’t be woken each night by drunk roomies clambering up a ladder. To be honest, it feels more like you’re sleeping in a private room than a dorm at Waiwas.
The communal spaces. Da bomb is the word. Go chill on the beanbag-dotted deck spaces under the pop art murals. Hang by the poolside sunning yourself post-surf. Or hit the ping pong table for a tourney. It’s up to you.
The vibe. It’s sociable as they come. Waiwas even admit that their whole hostel aesthetic has been crafted with helping strangers meet and mingle in mind.
Then there are the extra features; the ones that set this hostel apart from the bunch…
The in-house labrador will greet you with a wag and a smile whenever you return from the beach. That’s priceless. Mattresses are plush and thick, each capsule bed comes with its own luggage storage, and there’s even an on-site gym.
If you can get in here – and it does book out early – then do it!
Pipes Hostel
Pipes Hostel Lombok/HostelWorldColorful Pipes Hostel does that thing that so many hostels can only dream of: It manages to feel like a home away from home.
It’s set on a lane on the north side of Kuta town. That’s a good 20-minute walk from the bars and cafes in the center but the hostel is all the better for it. People hang here for longer, chill out at the bar (which has some very enticing drinks prices BTW – thinkg 45000 for a big beer!) and kick back by the pool.
Talking of the pool – it’s lush. Built with dark granite stone and shrouded by packs of palms and ferns it looks like some secret waterfall in the middle of the jungle.
However, the piece de resistance outside has to be a whole skate bowl. It’s a big one with a couple of edges and a nice rail; perfect for keeping up your turns and compressions when you’re not surfing.
Yea, you’ll be sleeping in bunks in dorms that sleep up to 11 people. There’s a mix of AC and non-AC rooms with fans.
Bed On The Beach
Bed On The Beach/HostelWorldMad Monkey Kuta Lombok is for the hedonists out there. This (in)famous hostel chain has been a staple on the Southeast Asian party circuit since anyone can remember. They now have outlets in Bangkok, Siargao, Koh Rong, Hoi An – you name it.
Their motto is “Travel deeper. Live fully. Go Mad.” As such, the aim is to create that no-holes-barred energy of a classic party hostel with a whiff of local culture and experience.
Their place in Kuta Lombok is smack dab in the middle of the center of Kuta Lombok. It’s on the doorstep of some of the town’s wildest bars, but also happens to host a backpacker bar of its own, which gets busy with guests and non-guests alike. They host oodles of events, from live music to quiz nights to beer pong to pool parties (yes, there’s a pool). It’s lively.
Dorms aren’t as plush as some places listed here but they’re good enough. You sleep on two-level metal-framed bunks in shared rooms that host between four and six people. Each has its own bathroom. There are also double rooms for a touch more moolah.
It’s possible to join surf lessons here for 400k per person. They run twice daily, in the morning and the afternoon.
