Surf camps in Canggu

6 Top-Rated Surf Camps in Canggu [2026]

In our humble opinion, surf camps in Canggu offer some of the best beginner surf packages in Southeast Asia. With Kuta too busy and too polluted to be worth it, this is the new playground on the Isle of the Gods.

Canggu has to be, hands down, one of the very best places to come to learn to surf in Asia right now.

We talk in-depth about why that’s the case over on our guide to surfing in Canggu, but for now suffice to say that it’s got the same ridiculous swell consistency as Kuta (the original learner mecca of Bali) only with cleaner beaches, funner waves, and better surf camps.

It’s the surf camps that we’ll focus on here. Over the last 10 years or so, little Canggu has bloomed into life as a haven for surf camps big and small.

It’s got some serious players; brands that have outlets all over Asia and Europe. But also homegrown Balinese surf schools that have that authentic, backpackery edge to them. Oh yea, and there are also quite a few downright awful camps that are certainly best avoided.

Anyway, various members of The Surf Atlas team have been going back and forth to Canggu since anyone can remember. And we’ve had more Bintangs on Batu Bolong Beach than we care to remember, too!

We’ve also seen the surf camp scene here erupt, so know a thing or two about which places make waves, and which once are a waste of your hard-earned travel cash. Here are the ones that we think are worthy of your hard-earned dollar…

Kavo Maison Surf & Yoga Camp

Kavo Maison Surf & Yoga Camp

Location is key here: Kavo Maison isn’t in the heart of Canggu. Rather, it’s set among rice fields in the quiet village of Munggu just outside of town.

That lets the spot pitch itself firmly at travelers who want something more considered than the typical Canggu surf hostel. It’s more like a boutique-style retreat with the feel of a family villa.

You get boho-styled rooms with natural textures and private bathrooms, and a setting that keeps the noise of central Canggu at arm’s length while staying just minutes from the break.

And there’s a nice communal vibe because of all that – people dine together, hang together, and there’s only five rooms so you get to know other guests super easy.

Packages are built around a daily rhythm of surf and yoga: Small-group coaching sessions with certified instructors head out to the waves most mornings, while yoga classes provide the recovery and balance to complement time in the water.

Daily breakfast and a free airport transfer are included as standard if you go for a package, and cultural and social activities add texture beyond the surf.

It’s a setup well-suited to beginners and those travelling solo who want to connect with like-minded people in a relaxed environment. For anyone looking for an authentic Bali experience that leans more into mindfulness and community than late nights and busy lineups, Kavo Maison makes a compelling case.

Soleia Surf Camp Bali

Sōleïa (known, once upon a time as, Solid Surf House) has been running all-inclusive surf packages since 2018. They’ve garnered a pretty loyal following off the back of strong coaching, genuine community vibes, and – probably most of all – outstanding value.

The camp sits a short walk from the beach, with accommodation options ranging from shared rooms and rustic wooden cabins through to deluxe private rooms, all built around communal spaces that naturally draw people together. There’s a pool table, a little swimming pool, and a v nice bar.

The all-inclusive package covers daily breakfast, a guided surf session each day to some of Bali’s best breaks, and a yoga session to keep the body moving between surfs. Boards and equipment are included, and the coaching program is backed by ISA certification – not actually that common on Bali.

Or, you can just book accom only and add on whatever you want when you arrive.

For those wanting to take things further, Sōleïa also runs a multi-week Surf Instructor Course through its Surf Academy.

Overall, it’s a budget-friendly, social camp first – great for solo travelers and the younger crowd that don’t mind dorms.

Pelan Pelan Bali

Pelan Pelan Bali

And chillll. Pelan Pelan is one of the most relaxed and friendly surf camps we’ve come across in our 10+ years of going to Bali. Now that’s really saying something on an island where the long sunset sessions and morning yoga classes seem to meld into each other you’re so darn relaxed.

But this surf lodge really does help you shed the worries and woes of the Rat Race with its well-calibrated surf packages.

We espeically love their flagship 8-day pacakge. It all revolves around daily surf sessions that take place Monday-Friday. Groups are up for an early start and then a transfer to a wave in the Canggu area by air-con vehicle. All groups are run solely by local instructors who are actually from Canggu and its surrounding villages, which makes a big difference because there’s a sort of unspoken right of way for surf campers with locals in these parts.

But the surf is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. This Zen week of chilling and wave riding also comes with three massages (yep – three in just one week!) and four yoga sessions with the pros, one of which is weighted towards breathing and meditation.

Pelan Pelan has rooms for solo travelers and also couples. The pad is set on the outskirts of Canggu, close to the rice paddies, where you can find peace and quiet by the side of thier in-house pool.

Kima Surf Camp Canggu

One of the bigger and better-equipped surf resorts in the Canggu area, Kima’s latest outpost sits just 250 meters from the beach, with both Echo Beach and Pererenan – solid options for intermediate and advancing surfers – within easy walking distance.

The setup here leans more resort than rustic: Three pools (including a large beach pool with a diving platform and bar), a 400m² rooftop gym, a 15-meter natural climbing wall, ice baths, a surf skate ramp, and a co-working space with fast internet.

Basically: It has it all!

It’s the kind of place that can comfortably absorb over 100 guests without feeling anonymous, with traditional grass-roofed architecture and tropical garden spaces helping to maintain that Bali character.

Surf guiding runs twice daily, seven days a week, covering breaks across multiple levels all around the island,  a notably generous offering that sets it apart from many camps.

Beginners are transferred to more forgiving spots in Seminyak and beyond, while intermediates can walk straight to Old Man’s or Pererenan.

Rooms range from dorms through to a two-bedroom luxury villa, giving it flexibility across budgets.

For surfers who want a high-energy, activity-rich base with serious surf structure and a sociable atmosphere, Kima Canggu is hard to beat.

Elsewhere Surf Camps

Elsewhere Surf CampsElsewhere Surf Camps / HostelWorld

Welcome to Canggu’s self-proclaimed number one surf and party camp, built for the 18+ crowd who want to squeeze every drop out of a Bali trip. Like day AND night.

Sitting right in the thick of Canggu, with easy access to the area’s best breaks, the camp has the infrastructure to back up its social reputation: Two pools, a bar (always busy), a rooftop cocktail terrace, a movie theatre, and a packed weekly schedule of themed dinners, free-flow nights, and events.

If you come for the socials, this one’s a doozy.

The surf program is more serious than the party billing might suggest actually. Instructor-to-guest ratios are kept deliberately low – usually a maximum of three guests per instructor – and the coaching is structured across clearly defined ability levels.

They have tailored offering that go from complete beginners through to more advanced surfers who want guiding, not teaching. Video analysis and surf theory sit alongside the in-water sessions, too.

Surf’n’Yoga Canggu

Surf’n’Yoga is part of an expanding collection of retreats under a notable brand that we have to say, we reallllllyy like.

They now have locations across Sri Lanka’s south and eash coasts, and in Bali.

Thier Canggu retreat emphasizes both yoga and surfing, yet it’s the serene accommodations and Zen atmosphere that set it apart.

Consider the retreat’s setting: It transports you from the bustling streets of Canggu and Kuta to the tranquil rice fields and jungles in the heart of southern Bali, right where the mountains and the jungle begin.

While this means a bit more travel to hit the surf each day, it guarantees something more peaceful than party hostels tucked into the thick of town town – a town, by the way, that’s grown like 10 fold since I first visited back in 2014.

The lodge boasts an impressive bamboo yoga shala, where instructors take you through Yin, Kirtan, and Dynamic Flow sessions. There’s also a really nice pool for chilling at. Oh, and surf courses include regular video feedback sessions from experts.

It’s all solid stuff.

A note on our methodology

Why these camps made the cut

Short answer: Because we think they’re brilliant.

Longer answer: we’ve spent over a decade writing about surf travel, and along the way we’ve developed a pretty solid eye for what separates a great surf camp from a forgettable one. Our picks combine strong reviews across the major booking platforms with our own editorial judgement about what actually makes a camp worth travelling to — the crème de la crème, if you will.

Our knowledge of these destinations comes from a combination of time on the ground and deep research – swell data, local knowledge, reader feedback, and years of tracking what makes a surf trip actually work. When we say a camp is good, that’s what’s behind it.

Worth knowing: our recommendations are currently weighted towards camps we can link to commercially — but affiliate status isn’t a condition of inclusion. If we think a camp belongs in this guide, it’s in. We’re always looking to broaden our selection, and where we don’t already have an affiliate relationship with a camp we rate, we’ll often reach out to try to establish one. If they say no, they stay in the guide regardless.

A heads up: some links are affiliate links — if you book through one, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It’s how we keep the lights on and the guides free.

  1. Thanks for your journal. I really enjoyed reading it. And it’s true that Canggu beach, Bali is very crowded being now and we don’t expected of course. And I really appreciate to you and your friends “The Surfers” to getting a place to surf as a surfing paradise, namely on the island of Lombok which is not far from the island of Bali itself. And actually there are more islands with good waves like Sekongkang, Sumbawa island….have you been there….? Well, that’s all for my comments… hope to be continued…and awaiting with your more writings about surfing paradise islands in Indonesia….
