7 romantic surf destinations for that perfect surfing honeymoon
There’s no better way to kick off married life than with surfboards under your arms, sand in your bedsheets, and sunset beers on the beach.
If your idea of a honeymoon involves clean peelers, tropical warmth, and maybe the odd volcano or waterfall thrown in for good measure, we’ve got you covered.
Here are seven surfing honeymoon spots where romance and right-handers come together just right. I wish my girlfried liked to surf.
Nosara, Costa Rica

Beachfront bliss and mellow peelers
Nosara’s got honeymoon written all over it.
This jungle-backed surf town on the Nicoya Peninsula mixes easy-going waves with boutique beachfront stays and yoga-by-sunset vibes.
The main break at Playa Guiones is super consistent and perfect for longboarders and progressing beginners, while more experienced couples can head to nearby Playa Ostional or Playa Pelada for something punchier.
Off the water? Book a jungle bungalow with an outdoor shower, visit wildlife sanctuaries, and take horseback rides through the surf at sunset. There’s no tackiness here — just pura vida, cold Imperials, and waves that never stop rolling.
The uber-lovely Nomadic Hotel is the one we’d plump for. It’s got a rep as like, one of the best and most luxurious surf hotels in the whole of Central America.
Siargao, Philippines
Palm trees, reef breaks and island romance
If you’re after the ultimate surf & tropical island combo, Siargao’s a winner.
Cloud 9 might be the island’s poster wave (a mechanical right for advanced surfers), but there are plenty of cruisier reef spots nearby like Daku Island and Quicksilver.
Rent a bike and explore — or better yet, charter a boat for a private surf adventure.
The island’s also insanely beautiful. Think lagoons, waterfalls, island-hopping tours, and boutique eco-resorts built with bamboo and breeze. The seafood is top notch, and the stargazing? Unreal.
This place became a bit of an Insta star a few years back and I went there right at the peak of the fervour. It’s calmed down a lot now, is chilled and has some great lux surf camps.
Ahangama, Sri Lanka

Reefy cruisers and boutique hotels
Sri Lanka’s south coast has quietly become one of the best surf honeymoon spots out there. Ahangama sits in the sweet spot between buzzy Weligama and chilled Midigama, and the surf scene here is perfect for couples: soft reef breaks like Marshmallow and Sticks for intermediates, punchier waves like The Rock if you’re pushing it.
Accommodation is mostly boutique hotels and converted colonial villas, many right on the sand. There are spice gardens, tea plantations, and wildlife parks nearby for the off days. And don’t miss Galle Fort for a sunset date night — cobbled streets, candle-lit seafood, and ocean views await there, plus one of the best pizza joints on the island.
Sayulita, Mexico
Surf all day, dance all night
Want your honeymoon with a side of margaritas and mariachi? Yea, me too.
Head to Sayulita. This colourful town on Mexico’s Pacific coast blends mellow beach breaks with cobbled streets, artisan markets, and more taco stands than you’ll ever need. The main break is perfect for beginners and longboarders, while nearby Playa La Lancha and Punta Mita offer cleaner options for intermediates.
It’s lively, romantic, and fun as hell. Boutique hotels dot the hills with infinity pools and jungle views, and nights here roll on with mezcal and live bands until you feel like dancing barefoot in the sand. Which you will.
Lombok, Indonesia

Paradise beaches and perfect beginner waves
If Bali’s too busy for your post-wedding retreat – and trust me, it is! – skip across to Lombok, where the south coast mixes world-class beginner spots like Selong Belanak with stunning white-sand beaches and a much more relaxed vibe.
Base yourselves in Kuta (Lombok, not Bali) for easy access to mellow reefs, private surf boats, and hidden bays.
There are some seriously romantic stays here — clifftop villas, bamboo lodges, and boutique eco-hotels overlooking the Indian Ocean. Off days mean scooter adventures to waterfalls and coconut farms, or just beach-hopping till your skin turns golden.
I cannot reccomend the Porter Jungle Hotel enough here. It’s chill and out of the action but still walkable to town and they now do surf packages.
Maldivian Atolls
Luxury overwater stays and reef perfection
If you’ve been eyeing those iconic overwater bungalows, here’s your chance to surf straight from one.
The Maldives aren’t just honeymoon paradise — they’re also home to some of the cleanest reef breaks in the Indian Ocean. Think Sultans, Honky’s, Jailbreaks, and all within boat distance of select resorts that, yea, are pricy, but also offer prime access to the waves.
In fact, that’s the best bit…Many surf-friendly resorts like Hudhuranfushi or Cinnamon Dhonveli offer exclusive access to certain breaks, so you’re not fighting crowds.
Add in candlelit dinners on sandbanks, turquoise lagoons for snorkelling, and luxury that’ll spoil you rotten. Yes, it’s a splurge. But it’s your honeymoon.
Byron Bay, Australia

Classic romance with a surf-town and hippy soul
For couples who want a bit of everything — great waves, cool cafes, hikes, music, and a sprinkle of boho charm — Byron is the Aussie classic. There’s The Pass for dreamy long rides, Tallows for something punchier, and nearby Lennox Head if you’re chasing power.
The town’s full of yoga spots, spa treatments, juice bars, and laid-back luxury. Watch sunrise from Cape Byron Lighthouse, stroll the Sunday markets, or clink wine glasses over a long lunch in the hinterland. Surf in the morning, wine in the evening, and plenty of romance in between.
