Mawi Beach – Lombok’s Best A-Frame Wave?

Mawi Beach makes you work a bit for a surf. The road in from Kuta Lombok – the main base and surf town on Lombok as a whole – is bumpy, narrow in parts, and winds through tobacco plantations and scrubby hills before it finally deposits you at the beach.

Then you see that the spot is home to a perfect, A-frame peak, and has just a smidgen of the crowds elsewhere in Lombok and you forgive the road everything.

Mawi is one the south coast of Lombok, roughly 30-45 minutes west of Kuta town depending on how well your scooter/ride handles the potholes. Tucked in between Mawun to the west and Selong Belanak to the east, it’s one of the most consistently good surf spots on the island, but is generally reserved for more advanced surfers.

The setting helps. Rugged green hills roll down to the bay on both sides. A rocky headland splits Mawi into two coves. One tiny warung shack sits at the back of the beach, selling cold coconuts and mie goreng. That’s pretty much it in terms of infrastructure, and the reason so many people love it here!

The surf at Mawi Beach

Mawi is a reef break with some real oomph. It sits in a particualrly exposed position of the Lombok south coast. That makes it a reliable swell magnet – when other spots on the south coast are struggling for size, Mawi tends to have something going on. It also means it’s generally a wave for more advanced surfers (at least upper int+ I’d say). SW groundswells are the main fuel, and when those combine with easterly offshores it can be genuinely one of the best in the region.

The wave is an A-frame that splits into a right and a left off the main peak. The right is the friendlier of the two on smaller days. It’s a fast, bowly wall that barrels nicely over the shallower inside section. On a head-high day with a bit of east wind grooming it, the right is as good a wave as you’ll find anywhere in Lombok.

The left is a different beast. It can hold a bigger swell, offers longer rides, and on solid days delivers clean barrels that peel down the reef for quite a way. Both sides of the waves suck in good power – you’ve been told!

Tide matters here. Mid to high tide is where most surfers will be happiest, with more water over the reef and more forgiving entry and exit. Low waters make the inside shallow and sharp, and the A-frame take off can lose all shape.

Wind is the other major variable. Easterlies are offshore and the best-case scenario. When the SE trades are light, they get funnelled through the valley behind the beach and can actually create a clean offshore effect. Any stronger than that and things get choppy fast. Like with most Indonesian surf, early mornings before the trades fill in are almost always the best window.

Crowds are relatively light compared to the big Lombok names like Tanjun Aan and Gerupuk. There’ll nearly always be a few surfers in the water when it’s on but it rarely gets truly busy.

One honest caveat: this is not a beginner spot. On smaller, higher-tide days there’s enough softness to it that confident intermediates can have a great time. But the sharp reef, the rips that appear on bigger swells, and the general rawness of the place mean it rewards experience more than a lot around.

Other surf spots near Mawi

If the conditions aren’t playing ball or you think Mawi has a bit too much grunt, then there’s LOADS in the area. That’s what makes Lombok so fricking awesome IMO. It’s got countless stunning beaches with surf for all levels within 20-30 minutes’ driving.

• Selong Belanak – Really close to Mawi but over the next headland to the north, so the trip takes 20 mins. A long, sand-bottomed bay with gentle, forgiving waves that work all year. Complete contrast to Mawi. Great for beginners.
• Mawun – Just around the headland to the east, maybe 10 minutes away. Primarily known as a swimming beach rather than a surf spot, but there’s a small reef break on the eastern end that can surprise with a fairly nice right. Good escape option if Mawi is maxed out and you just want a beautiful beach to decompress on.
• Air Guiling – 30-ish mins to the east, a cracking surf spot with a great local crew. Left over reef on one side, barreling right on the other side.
• Gerupuk – About 45 minutes back east past Kuta. A fishing village with boat access to five different breaks for all levels. One of the best all-round surf setups in Lombok and a brilliant option for days when the south coast swell is too much for Mawi. It’s busy though.
• Desert Point — If you’re an experienced surfer and you’re this far into Lombok, you already know about Desert Point. One of the great left-handers on earth, over on the southwest tip of the island. A mission to get to but arguably the best wave in the whole country when it fires.

When to surf Mawi Beach?

The dry season, May to October, is when Mawi is at its best, though the spot can work all year, including in the height of the wet season.

During the dry-season months (May-Oct), SW groundswells pulse up from the Indian Ocean with real regularity, the easterly offshores blow clean and consistent, and you can virtually guarantee something rideable every day of the week in Lombok. August tends to be the peak.

Shoulder season – April and October/November – can still be excellent, with slightly smaller crowds and a more unpredictable but often rewarding mix of conditions.

The wet season (November to March) doesn’t mean Mawi is dead, exactly. It still picks up swell. But the winds switch around, onshores are more frequent, and the roads in can get properly rough after heavy rain. Some locals actually prefer the wet season for its glassy early mornings and emptier lineups, but you’re taking more of a gamble with size. If size is what you want. I often say wet season is > dry for learners here.

Where to stay near Mawi Beach?

There’s no accommodation at Mawi itself – just that one warung, the car park, and the beach. That means picking a base nearby and driving in for sessions, which is honestly the right way to do it.

Most surfers use Kuta Lombok, roughly 30-45 minutes east, which has everything you need: surf shops, decent restaurants, cold Bintangs, and good road access to the whole south coast.

However, I think Selong Balanak village is the secret here. It’s just 20 mins away and has a chill but upcoming vibe.

• Suku Lifestyle Hotel & Villas [in Selong Balanak] – A superb hotel in Selong Balanak, with a whiff of the Moroccan riad about it. Gorgeous pool, gorgeous design. Sits about 20 mins from Mawi Beach by scooter.
• Porter Jungle Hotel [In Kuta Lombok] – If you prefer to be in the thick of te action in Kuta, then choose Porter Jungle. It’s a super-nice boutique hotel on a hill overlooking town. They have a lush pool, fine restaurant, and rooms that feel a bit White Lotus. In a good way, not an uber-posh way.
