Xago Surf & Travel Guide – The Reliable Beach Break of Asturias
Xago is one of the few open beaches to be found on the otherwise rock-skewed headlands of Cabo Peñas. 2,000 meters long, tucked behind a line of dunes, with high cliffs to the east and west, and swells rolling in like clockwork off the Atlantic, it’s a surf natural.
Consistency is the strong point – Xago basically works with guarantee from September to March, and even keeps the good coming throughout the summer months. Yes, there will be periods when you find it flat AF, and winter can be messy with overheads that blow out completely, but overall this is a solid, solid choice for a surf stay in north Spain.
The whole beach works on different tides. It’s mainly sandbanks, which, in my humble experience, are pretty awesome. A-frame waves abound along the whole length and there are some nice, left and right options coming off the cliffs at either extremity of the bay. AKA – you’ll have lots of choice.

What’s the surfing like in Xago?
Playa de Xago is a long, exposed stretch of golden sand about 20 minutes west of Gijón, backed by grassy dunes and cliffs. It’s open to almost any Atlantic energy, which means it’s rarely flat, but also means it can get messy and windblown without the right conditions.
When the stars align, Xago serves up powerful, peaky beach breaks with both lefts and rights. The peaks shift along the 1km beach depending on sandbar formation, so you’ll often see small packs spread out rather than everyone on a single peak.
Best conditions tend to be with a west to northwest swell and light offshore or cross-offshore breezes from the south or southeast. Autumn and spring are the prime windows for cleaner, more consistent surf, though winter brings the biggest waves. Xago handles size well, but strong rips are common on heavier days.
It’s a spot for all levels when small (there are even surf camps based in these parts for learners) but on bigger swells, it’s more for confident intermediates and advanced surfers. Access is easy, with parking close to the sand and a short walk through the dunes.
Other Surf spots near to Xago

Within a 30-minute drive of Xago, you’ve got a nice selection of Asturian breaks to mix into your trip.
To the east, Salinas is one of the region’s most famous surf beaches – a long, urban-backed stretch with multiple peaks and a buzzy surf scene. Go a little further and you can hit San Juan de Nieva, the more sheltered end of the Salinas bay, which can offer cleaner conditions when Xago is blown out.
West of Xago, there’s Verdicio, a slightly smaller, less consistent beach that can get good in lighter swells, and Playa de Aguilar near Muros, a scenic cove with fun, wedgy peaks.
Gijon itself is within easy reach, giving you San Lorenzo Beach, which has a variety of peaks and an unmistakably urban surf vibe.
When to surf in Xago?

- Autumn (September & November) – is widely considered the sweet spot. Swells are consistent, the water hasn’t lost its summer warmth, and the prevailing winds are more likely to be light or offshore.
- Spring (March-May) – can be similar, with long-period north-west pulses lighting up the beach breaks, though water temps are cooler.
- Winter (December-February) – delivers the biggest waves, and Xago can handle size, which is good – and a bit rare for the open beaches of north Spain. I will say it’s for confident surfers only. The water drops to around 12–13°C, you’ll need a 4/3mm suit with boots, and the weather can be stormy with rips in the ocean.
- Summer (June-August) – is the least reliable for swell, but local wind swells can still produce waist- to chest-high peaks — perfect for learners and intermediates, especially in the mornings before the onshores kick in.
Where to stay in Xago?
There’s actually not loads of accommodation in the area around Xago. This is rural Asturias and the whole beach is fringed by a nature reserve. That said, there are options…
- Casa Lin Nieva – A simple, local coastal house with self-catering and space for 9 people at once. This one’s one of the few places with very easy access to Xago beach.
- Alojamientos Mirapeñas – If you have access to a hire car, then this one’s your best bet IMO. Super-nice apartments in a cool old Asturian house in the countryside about 10 mins drive away from the beach.
What to do in Xago when you’re not surfing?

Xago is surrounded by wild coastal scenery, so it’s easy to fill a flat day. The dunes behind the beach are part of a protected natural area, with short walking trails and great views back over the bay. Head up the cliffs at either end for even better panoramas of the Asturian coast…
- Explore the Cabo Peñas – For nature, the Cabo Peñas headland is just north — the northernmost point in Asturias — offering dramatic cliffs and lighthouse walks.
- Parque Natural de Redes – Hiking is great here. It’s actually the eastern end of the Picos Europa chain of mountains but less busy. Summits hit 2,000 meters up and it’s lush, grassy territory below (reminds me of Wales!).
- Visit Aviles – A small industrial city with a beautifully restored old quarter and the futuristic Oscar Niemeyer Cultural Centre
