5 Incredible Sri Lanka Surf Hostel Bookings for 2025
Choose a standout Sri Lanka surf hostel with this expert guide to the best bargain surf stays currently on offer on this paradise island.
Sri Lanka is now firmly established as one of the top beginner and improver surf destinations in Asia. But we’d rank it as one of the most affordable.
Not only does a whole smorgasbord of rice and curry set you back like $5 here, but you can get board rentals and lessons for about $15 a pop, and a Sri Lanka surf hostel for under $8/ night.
This guide will focus on the hostel stays that we love across the island and we think you’ll be rather pleasantly surprised at what’s on offer.
There are some seriously nice options for all levels of surfer, some with lux additions like pools, others with their own skate parks and whatnot.

Barefoot Backpackers Hostel, Hiriketiya
Located on the dreamy stretch of rugged shoreline that runs between Hiriketiya Beach and Dickwella Beach, Barefoot Backpackers perches above a series of coves that are forever bashed by the oncoming swells of the Indian Ocean. You can peer through the lanky palms here and watch the ocean moving back and forth all day long.
But the location is just one great aspect of this top-notch Sri Lankan surf hostel…
We also adore the vibe. The people who run it – and pretty much everyone who stays here – is downright lovely. It’s not the beer-guzzling crowd of package vacationers that have started to trickle into Hiri. It’s the thoughtful, chilled surfer peeps who are talkative and nice.
The hostel itself is really well thought out. They have breezy, air-con dorm rooms in traditional Sri Lankan longhouses that help increase the size of the bunks and add a little privacy. There’s a little restaurant that does top-notch Tex-Mex and other dishes, plus a lush garden with slackline and hangout spots galore.
You’re no more than 5 minutes’ walk to the main beach break in Hiri. A little further to the left-hand point on the other side of the bay, but no biggie.
A note on why we partner with BookSurfCamps.com: Book Surf Camps are probably the biggest online aggregator of surf camps and surf-yoga packages in the world. We sounded out a quite a few potential partners before we affiliated with them. But, in the end, the abundance of choice for beginners, intermediates, and female-only surfing sealed it. We also love the simplicity of their booking system and the trusted brand name, along with the focus on connecting with homegrown local businesses on the ground.

There’s no denying the prime location of the Global Surf Lodge in Kabalana.
It’s one step over the main Matara Road from a huge section of reef breaks near Koggala Beach that can suit all levels, and under one minute’s drive from the upcoming haven of Kabalana Beach (a seriously nice surf spot with a reef break for upper intermediates and a beach break for beginners).
What more could you want?
Well…how about a sprawling tropical villa with a massive pool in the grounds? How about an on-site eatery that serves up tuna poke bowls and healthy veggie wraps? How about the chance to book private doubles with hammocks swinging on the private terrace?
This one has all that and more.
You can either book this as room only and then add on your surf lessons/rental once you get there, or opt for a surf package – they run everything from 8-day camps to full-on three-week beginner-to-expert camps.
Midigama is a great option if you’re traveling in a multi-level group or want to sample a mix of classic regional Sri Lankan reef breaks.
And, we’d add, that there’s nowhere better to stay in the area than the Surfing Wombats hostel.
The pad is a super chilled hangout spot that’s run by very happy folks. They have a whole range of options to suit pretty much every budget, from tents to dorm rooms to family suites with their own bathrooms, so it’s a good option no matter who you’re traveling with.
The location is prime: One minute (actually less than that but we walk sloooow) down the road and you’ll be at the paddle out point for Lazy Left and Lazy Right, two of the most consistently working and bowly-good-fun spots in Midigama.
Oh yea, and they’ve recently added a pizza restaurant to the site that serves up the best darn Neapolitan pies this side of Naples itself. Yum.
Steffi’s Mandala is precisely the sort of place you should have on the main beach at Hikkaduwa. AKA: it’s a relaxed hangout spot for yogis and surfers in one of the most relaxed beach towns on the southwestern coastline.
You’ll be welcomed into a thatch-roof restaurant area that is literally steps off the sands of Narigama Beach. There, they serve up healthy Buddha bowls and perhaps the finest darn avocado on toast we’ve had on the island.
There are beanbags and cabana chillout spots for tanning yourself. The sea rolls in like 20 meters in front. Surfboard rental shacks are about 10 seconds’ walk down the sand. It’s a bargain, tailor-made surf stay.
The aesthetic here is hippy chic. Rooms are toned-down minimalist spaces with nice whitewashed color schemes and charming additions like homemade dreamcatchers and whatnot.
The team at Hangten SurfSkate Hostel have been trailblazers over in the East Coast’s surf hub.
They managed to open the first proper skatepark on this side of the island (and it’s a good one, too, with multiple bowls set in proper concrete). Plus, they’ve crafted a proper bargain hostel that’s super sociable – expect daily events organized via the dedicated hostel group chat.
Location wise, it’s actually not what you might expect. Instead of sitting on the busy road in the heart of A-bay, it’s on Pasarichenai Beach to the south of Main Point. We’re talking a five minute walk up the sand to the uber-iconic right-hand point break, one of the very best on the island.
Rooms aren’t too big – it’s limited to 8-bed mixed dorms.
