Tenerife Surf Hostel Picks – 5 Amazing Budget Stays

We’ve surfed north and south in Tenerife and will say this: The island is blessed with some top-quality budget stays. Our selection of the best can help you choose a prime Tenerife surf hostel for your next adventure.

On the hunt for a quality Tenerife surf hostel? Hunt no longer. This guide has you covered. We quizzed The Surf Atlas writers who’ve been to the Canaries and back more times than they can count in the last 10 years about the finest budget stays the island can offer. This is what they came up with…

A handful of enticing hostel stays that pepper this amazing rock in the Atlantic from north to south. They’re a varied bunch, you know.

Go north, where the tourist crowds thin out, where the beaches become wilder and rockier, and the waves a touch more challenging, and you can find charming village stays where you’ll spend your evenings eating with likeminded surf travelers and stargazing into unpolluted skies.

Go south and there are long, sandy beaches that host the famous reef breaks of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. The setup there is great for total beginner surfers, and there are even hostels that offer surf-camp packages that include lessons, surf rental, and transport as part of the price.

Ocean Nomads Coworking

Overall, we think the Ocean Nomads just about does enough to steal the top spot here. It’s our official best Tenerife surf hostel for 2024 for a few reasons…

First off, they have gone out of their way to design a fully-fledged surf-camp package that’s ram-packed full of surfing. It’s an intensive 8-day romp that includes six days of surfing and 10 lessons overall. They’re all run by the highly rated Rocky Point Surf School in Playa de las Americas and are very well rounded, included on-the-spot feedback after each lesson, surf-skate elements, and video analysis.

Booking the whole package will set you back maybe $580 per person. To do it cheaper, you could go accommodation only and then organize surf lessons/trips when you get there for an extra price. That’s easy, since they’ve got a great relationship with Rocky Point school and can book you onto lessons whenever you wanna’ join.

On top of all that, the hostel itself is pretty slick. It opens onto salt-washed decks that have 180-degree views of Playa de las Americas. There’s a modern shared kitchen with oodles of space and amenities. And there’s a fantastic chillout bar – a perfect apres-surf option just steps from your dorm bed.

Casanaga

Set on a dramatic spur of rock, glimmering in yellow, Casanaga is a wonderful hostel with plenty of character.

It’s not your run-of-the-mill sort of budget place. It comes without a whiff of the package holiday vibes of the south; a real Canarian beach house that has one foot firmly plonked on the reef-fringed bays of Playa de Benijo (think reliable, intermediate+ friendly surfing from the start of your holiday to the very end).

It’s not a massive hostel. They offer a mixed dorm, a female-only dorm, and a couple of double rooms for those who like a bit of added privacy. All guests get breakfast as standard, but can also opt into homecooked local meals made from local ingredients in the evening – it’s something we recommend doing, as it’s as much a social enjoyment as it is a culinary one!

Mhmm…this is a real home-away-from-home hostel. Evening jam sessions, chats until the early hours with other travelers, morning surfs with the owner – it’s that sort of place.

There is surf within walking distance and they even have a couple of boards on site that you can borrow.

Tree House

The Tree House is a bit of a different option. It’s not your classic Tenerife surf hostel in that it trades the bustling beachfronts, promenades and resorts for a location that’s a bit more inland, perched up between the dusty hillsides on the south end of the island.

The upshot? You’ll notice the pace of life is a little slower and the feel is a whole load more tranquil. When it’s flat, you can while away whole days chilling in the garden, reading under the shade of a cactus, or dealing with the emails in the on-site co-working space (which is one of the best we’ve seen in the Canaries, BTW).

There are plenty of frills to look forward to here, some that will cost a little extra, others that come as standard. They include regular yoga and fitness classes, transfers to nearby towns like El Medano for sightseeing, planned surf lessons for guests, and a private swimming pool, something rare among the surf hostels of Tenerife!

Endless Summer Vibes

Endless Summer Vibes also table a curated surf itinerary for those coming to Tenerife just to hit the waves. It’s just under $600 in all, but that gets you seven nights’ accomodation, 5x surf lessons with thier in-house instructors, and a guided tour to the local beaches, plus any surf equipment you might need during lesson times just in case you’re not bringing you own board.

If the price tag for that seems a touch high, or if you’re not into surfing every single day, then you can book a bed only for just a fraction of the price.

The lodge itself is has a homey feel to it. The rooftop garden and BBQ space stand out because they’re the petri dish for the evening’s entertainments and get-togethers. People will hang there, clinking cold beers and grilling until the sun has set and well past it.

What’s also nice is that it’s a small hostel. There are only 10 beds here. Yes, that means they’ll sell out fast, but it also means there’s a real family vibe to the group, which is why it’s our top pick for solo travelers/surfers.

Casa Grande Surf Hostel

Tucked into the maze-like center of little El Medano, a charming fishing town on the quieter eastern shore of Tenerife, Casa Grande Surf Hostel strikes a fine balance between being close to everything – the consistent reef breaks of Americas are only 25 minutes’ drive away and the airport is only 5 minutes away – and channelling a more authentic side of the Canaries.

Dorms are either six bed or four bed and there are designated female-only rooms. While the beds are simple metal bunks, there are some welcome extras in the form of private lockers, free use of the in-house bikes, free surfboard use (very welcome indeed!) and board storage.

Just as the name implies, this hostel also doubles up as a bit of a surf school. Just hop to reception and they’ll sort you out with lessons, board hire, gear, or even multi-day surf camp packages.

We should also mention the vibe. Short of being a proper party hostel, this one’s got a very chilled approach to hostelling. It’s more of a hangout space for mates, and you’ll feel truly welcomed on their terrace bar, on their ad hoc pub crawls, and during the regular BBQ evenings. Good vibes all round.
