6 Incredible Surf Camps in Peniche for 2026
Surf camps in Peniche lead the way in Portugal. This is one of two major learn-to-surf hubs in the country (the other is Ericeira) and we’d say the finest for complete beginners.
Oh, Peniche. Sitting plum at the center of a six-mile stretch of coast that sucks in swell from all directions, always has something off shore, and looks downright beautiful with its oat-topped dunes, there’s no denying that this is one of the best surf towns in Portugal.
We might even go one further than that. We might even say that it’s the single best place to come for a Portuguese surf camp, mainly on account of the abundance of establishments and the presence of north-facing Baleal, a beach that’s basically designed for first timers who want nice, easy, mellow bumps to get started on.
We might say that, but Portugal has embarrassing riches in the surf-town department so we can’t quite say that (largely because of Ericeira and Sagres, which are both also top options for campers).
Either way, there are some seriously enticing surf camps here doing seriously enticing packages. At just under 1.5 hours’ drive from Lisbon Airport and reachable by direct bus from the capital, it’s easy to see why thousands flock by to do their wavecraft in these parts.
So, without further ado, here’s a look at what we think are the stand-out surf camps in Peniche for the coming season…

The Salty Peniche
The best overall surf camp in Peniche, and perhaps all of Portugal!

We listed this as the best surf camp in Peniche last year and it remains in poll position for 2026. The Salty (previously called The Salty Pelican) is one of the best, not just in this little town, but in the whole of Portugal!
They’ve crafted a super-cool property behind the dunes of Baleal Beach. It’s enough to make the Instagrammers drool.
There are dorms and doubles that ooze boho-tropical style, a rooftop garden that would look right at home in Mykonos, and a yoga Shala overlooking the roaring Atlantic waves.
My lord it’s lovely.
You can opt to book it as standalone accommodation if you like, but we’d recommend going for the full surf-camp option.
They run a flagship 8-day package that includes five full days of surfing and – get this – UNLIMITED yoga.
You’ll learn all the surfing basics under the trusty tutelage of Alex, a Portuguese Surf Federation-rated coach, and other coaches from South Africa and the UK. The price includes gear rental from check in to check out, meaning you can stroll across the street and surf whenever you like.
There are two tiers of booking. The cheaper packages are in shared dorms. The more expensive can be shared by a couple for private doubles.
Our advice? Book early if you want to hit the Salty Pelican Peniche in the summer. This is one of the hottest properties on the Euro surf-camp rotation right now!
The location trumps basically all in town. You’ll stat just south of Bealeal island, within easy reach of the finest beginner beaches in the whole region, with options that face west and north (meaning there’s almost always a nice offshore to play with).
Balili Surf House
The best small-group surf camp in Peniche

The Balili Beach House is one of the few surf camps in Peniche that’s actually on the little island of Baleal itself. That’s a stunning place to be based because you’ll be living in a charming little fishing village that’s been there for centuries, on a rugged rock that’s joined to the mainland by a tombola of sand.
The aim with this one has been to craft a boutique surf package that gives a taste of cottage life on the Atlantic coast. They do that with rooftop yoga sessions in the evening and loads of social events on top of the surfing, from homemade breakfasts together in the morning to walking tours of the nearby medieval city of Óbidos.
Rather than having dedicated in-house instructors, these guys outsource the surf tuition to the Escola de Surf de Peniche. Rest assured that’s a place of very high repute. If 4.9/5 on the old Goog doesn’t do it for you, then let’s just say it’s the school we recommend to most first-time surfers heading Baleal way.
It’s possible to book surf camp packages directly with Balili. Alternatively, just book accomodation and sort lessons and surf packages when you arrive.
A note on why we partner with BookSurfCamps.com: Book Surf Camps are probably the biggest online aggregator of surf camps and surf-yoga packages in the world. We sounded out a quite a few potential partners before we affiliated with them. But, in the end, the abundance of choice for beginners, intermediates, and female-only surfing sealed it. We also love the simplicity of their booking system and the trusted brand name, along with the focus on connecting with homegrown local businesses on the ground.
Boa Onda Guesthouse
Best for yoga
The Surf Atlas staff have a bit of a soft spot for the Boa Onda Guesthouse because it manages what few Portuguese surf camps manage these days – it’s small, intimate, and local.
Yep, this is no mass-brand, factory-line surf camp. It’s staffed by real people who are almost always smiling and attracts crowds of travelers who aren’t after the height of luxury and whatnot. You know, nice people!
Of course, they gotta’ back that up with a good surf package. And they most certainly do.
Yep, the five-day option with these guys offers four two-hour surf sessions on one of Peniche’s most famous beaches (Supertubos – but don’t worry, you won’t be thrown straight in the keg) and four yoga classes. They have a max group size of 10 each week, which is great for making new pals and getting that family vibe.
And then there’s the yoga. That’s where this 5-day camp really shines. You do it everyday and it’s focused specifically on omproving your surf, to stretch and hone the right muscle sets for good pop ups and cut backs. Nice.
Peniche Surf Lodge
The best budget surf camp in Peniche

You’ll notice that a lot of the camps we mention here are actually located in nearby Baleal town or at least on the road to Baleal.
That still counts and Peniche because it’s like 10 minutes’ drive away, plus Baleal is now the de facto place for learner surfers to do thier classes (easier waves, more wind protection).
Peniche Surf Lodge breaks the mould. This one’s down on the edge of Peniche’s old town area, in the quiet streets just back from Papoa Beach.
The upshot? It’s a great choice if you want to explore the history sites, hop more authentic Portuguese restauarants, and wander the famous fortress walls and clifftop turrets of Peniche.
The package offers loads of bang for buck – think 3x surf lessons and free surfing on the two other days of the week, along with transport to suitable breaks (likely to be Baleal, but could also be Supertubos and others to the south of town, depending on your level).
An all-round great choice that’s very affordable but, crucially, close to the heart of old Peniche.
Ethic’Surf House
A chilled option that’s a bit more off the beaten track
Ethic’Surf House is a bit more chilled; a bit more off the beaten track.
If you like surf sessions by morning and losing yourself in a Kindle by afternoon, then it’s a good choice.
Plus, it’s the option if you don’t want to be right in the thick of the action in downtown Peniche or Baleal, since it’s located in the more local little village of Ferrel about 15 minutes’ walk up the road from the main surf beaches.
They’ve only got a handful of rooms, so you get a nice family sorta’ feel to the stay here. You’ll meet and mingle with other travelers in the little garden area out back, and get to enjoy local’s only cafes and bars on the doorstep.
They also have a connection with a well-rated local surf school for when you want your lessons and do on-site board rental.
Oh ya, and it’s cheaaaap!
Alex Surf Hostel
The best budget surf house in Peniche

No guide to the top surf camps in Peniche could possibly skip a mention of the Alex Surf Hostel.
This is one of the OG surf getaways in central Portugal. It offers a classic camp routine over 11 days that allows for a lot of free time on the waves and a backbone of 2x guided surf lessons each day for eight days of the stay.
Accommodation-wise, you’re looking at a bright and breezy townhouse with a pool in the garden, and large shared kitchen spaces.
It’s about five minutes’ walk up the road from beginner-friendly Baleal Beach and it kinda’ feels like you’ve just rocked up and rented a villa with mates.
Where the Alex Hostel stands out is on the price to quality front.
Packages start at around the $480 mark for a full week. That’s a lot of time on the waves for less moolah than most of the other surf camps listed here.
And it’s quality, not just quantity. You’ll be in the capable hands of Peniche local Alex Silva, who’s surfed these spots for 20 years or more, so he knows a thing or two about how to handle the waves from Peniche down to Supertubos.
