The 5 Best Surf Hostels Lisbon Has For 2024/25
Check out this selection of the best surf hostels Lisbon has up its sleeve. It includes beachside pads in Carcavelos and industrial-chic stays with rooftop bars, none of which should break the bank.
We’re ALWAYS asked about Lisbon.
And we ALWAYS say the same thing: Lisbon isn’t on the coast.
It’s actually on the estuary of the Tagus River. The nearest beaches with waves are a 30-minute tram ride up the Estoril shoreline to Carcavelos or across the water in the Costa de Caparica.
Now, those aren’t far, but it’s worth remembering because so many people jet in here expecting something like Biarritz or Sydney, where you can stroll to an urban surf beach and paddle right out.
The good news is that the surfing around Lisbon is so damn good, and the popularity of Portugal’s capital as a gateway to some of the most reliable surf in Europe has soared so much in recent years, that there are now some top-notch budget stays in the city for would-be surfers.
They’re the spots with affordable lodgings that let you combine trips to local beaches for surf with explorations of this enthralling metropolis, it’s sights, sounds, and – of course – nightlife.
Those are what we’ll focus on in this guide: The best surf hostels Lisbon can muster. Each has been handpicked by a member of The Surf Atlas team for a special reason – the style of their lodge, what’s offered in the package, the price, the quality of the surf instruction, that sort of thing.

Lisbon Surf Hostel
The Lisbon Surf Hostel should be top of anyone’s list when it comes to shoestring living in Lisbon right by the waves.
This highly-rated (we’re talking 9.8/10 sorta’ highly rated) pad is located in the western suburb of Carcavelos.
That’s THE CLOSEST surf break to the big city; a spot that offers punchy beach breaks and even outer right-hand reefs. It’s packed with surf schools and rental options, and is the go-to place to surf when in Lisbon. AKA – you’re in the right place.
Anyway…back to the hostel.
Past the unassuming exterior, this one’s got some class features. Pod beds made of natural wood offer extra privacy with pull-back curtains. There’s a private ensuite for EVERY SINGLE ROOM in the hostel, which you certainly won’t get in the heart of the downtown, that’s for sure.
Go outside to the garden and it hits even better heights. That’s where you’ll chill in after/between surfs and surf lessons. It’s very private, hosts an inviting pool, and even comes with its own shaded yoga and mediation space.
The final cherry on top? That has to be the breakfast. It’s optional and costs extra but leaves other hostel offerings in the dust. Forget stale bread. Say hello to fruit-packed granola bowls and avo on toast.
Surf Cascais

As the name suggests, Surf Cascais isn’t actually in Lisbon but in the neighbouring town of Cascais. It’s a few stops further on from Carcavelos beach, under an hour down the train line from the downtown of the capital.
The reason we list it here (and rank it as the best surf camp in the city on our dedicated guides to surf camps in Lisbon) is because it trumps pretty much any option when it comes to sheer volume of surfing.
These guys run fully-fledged surf-travel packages that last up to eight days or more, though you can customize to stay as long or as little as you like.
That means you aren’t just paying for a bed in a dorm. You’re getting that, but you’re also getting 2x 2-hour surf lessons per day with their Portuguese Surfing Federation-certified instructors, transfers to the local beaches (the ones with the best waves each day as decided by the guide) and a buffet breakfast.
All that for under $600 ain’t bad, you know. Plus, there are potential discounts of up to 10% for low-season stays.
LX Hostel
Neatly plonked in the midst of a rejuvenated industrial quarter right on the edge of the Tagus estuary, LX Hostel is a great launch pad for surfs on either the Estoril Coast or the Costa da Caparica, which begins less than 20 minutes over the bridge right by the hostel – you can even uber there!
There’s that fact, and the fact that’s it’s unquestionably one of the coolest damn hostel stays in the city right now.
Yessir, this one has STYLE.
A part of the LX Factory creative project, it’s housed in an old depot building that opens onto a sun-splashed rooftop deck with one of the hippest bars around. Cold beers and live music abound up there come the summer evenings.
Guests can pick between pod beds in shared dorms or private rooms that even have their own bathrooms. Extra amenities include a shared kitchen and speedy WiFi links.
We’d sum it up like this: Choose LX if you want a cheap but edgy place to stay in a less-visited part of Lisbon, away from the tourist areas but within 20 minutes of popular surf spots.
Nice Way Cascais & Surf Camp
Nice Way once again whips us down to the midst of the Estoril Coast and the super-stylish town of Cascais. Think of it as Lisbon’s beach resort and summer escape, only with surf beaches on the doorstep.
The location means that you’ll have to ride the train into Lisbon when you want to see the castles and hit the Bairro Alto. That shouldn’t be an issue, though – trains go every 20 minutes, take 40 minutes, start at 9.50am and don’t stop until 11pm at night.
The benefits of trading city for beach town are many. Most of all, you get stays like this…
Nice Way is a chilled surf camp come hostel occupying a pink-tinged Portuguese townhouse. It has 4-, 10- and 12-bed mixed dorms that go for as little as $35/night in the peak season. All beds are curtained pod beds. Bathrooms are well-appointed and modern.
What sets this one apart is the general vibe of it all. Nice Way really is…well…nice. They run surf lessons on nearby beaches for all levels, every day. Later on, you’ll gather to dine together and then clink beers as the DJ takes over at the in-house bar.
It’s an all-in-one surf-city break solution.
The Salty Pelican Beach Retreat

Regular readers of our surf camp guides will know that we have a real soft spot for the Salty Pelican brand (they haven’t given us anything to wax so lyrical about them – promise!. At least not yet. Hint hint.)
Basically, they’ve nailed it, striking the perfect balance between price, surf offering, location, and general atmosphere.
Their outlet in Lisbon is The Salty Pelican Beach Retreat, which is – once again – technically in Cascais. And boyyyyy is it a stunner…
The building itself looks more like a medieval Portuguese palace, with wrought-iron balconies and gorgeous Azulejo tiles strewn across the facades.
Inside, you’ll find some of the plushest and most luxurious dorm rooms of any hostel, anywhere. They’re packed with neat, thoughtful touches – houseplants, hemp beanbags, balconies. The bathrooms follow suit. These aren’t campsite-style loos but regal spaces with walk-in showers and marble sinks.
Ohhh, and the pool – it’s a stunner.
There are two ways to secure a stay here. Either book onto one of their planned surf camps, like this 8-day option that has unlimited yoga and free time to explore both Sintra and Lisbon. Or, book just your room and add-on extras like yoga and surf lessons when you arrive.
